Grammar Mastery Series

This three-course series develops a strong foundation in English grammar by moving beyond memorized definitions and focusing on how grammatical rules govern sentence structure and composition.

The first course, Essential Grammar Skills: Beyond Basic Nouns and Verbs, challenges what students think they know and establishes a precise understanding of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions (including objects of prepositions), introducing the underlying logic of sentence construction.

​

The second course, Essential Grammar Skills II: Connecting Words and Diagramming Sentences, expands that foundation by exploring adverbs, conjunctions, and interjections while introducing sentence diagramming as a tool for visualizing grammatical relationships.

The third course, Essential Grammar Skills III: Advanced Sentence Structure and Diagramming, deepens students’ analytical skills through more complex diagramming and a focused study of direct and indirect objects, enabling them to interpret and construct sophisticated sentences with clarity.

Together, these courses cultivate not just grammatical knowledge, but a disciplined understanding of the logical structure of language.

Course 1:
Essential Grammar Skills: Beyond Basic Nouns and Verbs

Format: Two 75-minute class sessions twice a week for six weeks during Summer Session, one 75-minute class session a week for twelve weeks during Autumn Session or Spring Session

This course establishes the foundation for the Grammar Mastery Series by moving beyond simplified definitions and introducing students to the principles that govern grammatical structure. Rather than treating a noun as merely a “person, place, or thing,” students examine how nouns and pronouns function within sentences, how verbs determine structure and meaning, and how prepositions and their objects clarify relationships between ideas.

Through guided analysis and structured practice, students develop a precise understanding of nouns, pronouns, verbs, prepositions, and objects of the preposition. Instruction emphasizes how these elements operate together within the framework of sentence construction, reinforcing the idea that grammar is a system governed by consistent and logical rules.

Course 2: Essential Grammar Skills II: Connecting Words and Diagramming Sentences

Prerequisite: Completion of Course 1: Essential Grammar Skills: Beyond Basic Nouns and Verbs

 

 

This course builds on the foundation established in Course I by expanding students’ understanding of how additional parts of speech shape meaning and refine sentence structure. Students study adjectives and adverbs as modifiers that add precision, examine conjunctions as the connectors that organize ideas, and analyze interjections as expressions that interact with sentence structure in distinct ways.

Through structured sentence diagramming, students learn to visualize how these elements function within a sentence. This process reinforces the logical relationships between words and clarifies how modification and connection operate within grammatical systems. Instruction continues to emphasize that grammar is not a set of arbitrary rules, but a coherent structure governed by consistent principles.

Prerequisite: Completion of Course 1: Essential Grammar Skills: Beyond Basic Nouns and Verbs and completion of Course 2: Essential Grammar Skills II: Connecting Words and Diagramming Sentences

This course completes the Grammar Mastery Series by guiding students into the analysis of more complex sentence structures. Building on prior knowledge, students examine how direct and indirect objects function within sentences and how these elements contribute to clarity, emphasis, and meaning. Instruction focuses on how multiple components interact within increasingly sophisticated grammatical constructions.

Through advanced sentence diagramming, students learn to break down and visually represent complex sentences, reinforcing their understanding of grammatical relationships at a deeper level. This analytical approach strengthens their ability to interpret and construct precise, well-formed sentences, emphasizing that even complex language follows consistent and logical structural principles.
